The Gorey Files

After living on the Cape for most of my life I finally made it down to the Edward Gorey House Museum this past weekend. We decided to take Rory’s little sisters, Ceili & Azora. They love Mr. Gorey’s children stories and I was happy to experience going there with them. They were ecstatic to find out that it was Mr. Gorey’s actual house & I have to say it was exactly how I imagined it. The best part was admiring closely all of his most prized possessions which included, books (he had over 25,000 books in his home when he passed away.. more than the library down the street), old glass bottles, stuffed animals (especially bears), a cat named Ogdrid, rusty antique cheese graters, homemade puppets, and lots of other peculiar knick knacks. It was awesome. His kitchen was amazing. Everyday that he left the house he found a rock that he really loved and would find a place for it in his kitchen. Most space on the counter tops had a rock on it. He would go home and figure out where that rocks place was. It created such interesting energy in the room. There was also a really fun Gashlycrumb Tinies scavenger hunt. I love that book. I will definitely be making a trip back there in order to really look at the fine details of his life… but he was truly an amazing, bizarre, eccentric and super talented human being that I’m happy I got the chance to see the simple little details that made him who he was.

Oh, and on the way home it was cool because we saw a rafter of turkey’s crossing the road and they looked as if they had jumped off the pages of an Edward Gorey Illustration…
