The Last Frontier – Part II

One of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced in my life happened on this trip. Actually, there were two specific instances that literally took my breath away. First when we were flying over Alaska – it happened to be just before sunset – I was looking out the window with my face pressed against it when the plane came just below the cloud line and there it was… miles upon endless miles of majestic mountains covered in snow with the red, orange and purple colors of the sky illuminating off of them. They went on forever and ever.. as far as my eyes could see and I couldn’t believe it .. it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

The second beautiful thing happened on top of Flattop Mountain. We decided to rent a car for a day or two and went on a hike up Flattop in the morning. There were only a few other people who had decided to do the same thing that day so it was really peaceful. It’s amazing how much you can hear when you are on a mountain. It’s so quiet that all you can hear is white noise.. just a tiny ringing in your ear – the silence is that deafening. The air was just as crisp – and it smelled of evergreens and birch. It didn’t take long for the mist to roll in – at one point we had stopped for a picnic & I couldn’t see where we had just came from. It was kind of scary. But it was rolling so it was never thick enough that we couldn’t see at all. We decided to head to the top and it’s a good thing we did because I can’t imagine missing out on the view we had from the top. We were at cloud level and the sun was just setting on the horizon – it didn’t look real.. that’s how lovely it was. On one side of the mountain the sun was going down and on the other side the moon was up. We stayed up there for a good while (or as long as our fingertips would allow). I think Rory would agree with me that it was one of those experiences that you feel completely grateful to have been given…
