the warrior’s way

So, what started as an idea to go across country for a change developed into a very interesting idea incorporating our lifestyle and passion with the open road…. For the past year or so I have been involved with the organic movement going on in the NE; working on the Kelly Farm, helping my parents in their farm, going to the NOFA conference, joining and attending the Cape Cod Organic Gardeners meetings, reading lots of books and generally becoming more engrossed in our culture and what life has become for us in 2009. All of this positive energy gave the cross country trip a clearer purpose.. getting back to basics and motivating us for a more self sustaining lifestyle. So, back in March Rory and I submitted a grant proposal for an idea that we had for a documentary…

We’re taking off on a mass migration out west beginning May 11th to document the organic, sustainable and alternative lifestyle movement going on in the states. We plan to work on a bunch of organic farms and participate in some awesome workshops on sustainable living, eco houses and even blacksmithing! Mostly, we’re excited to meet and connect with people who are passionate, motivated and have refreshing ideas about alternative living. It’s definitely going to be a very personal journey but at the same time it can be used to inform others. The plans are in the works but we’re definitely getting pumped! We were hoping to get the grant money for a decent camera and a few other things.. but sadly it didn’t come through. We’ll have our still cameras, our super 8 camera and a pretty shotty video camera but we’ll be posting in the blog – pairing my photos and writing with video and sound – it’ll develop into it’s own little thing!

So far we’ve got farms lined up from here to Colorado… we’ll be tackling the next half of the trip in the next few weeks. It’s crazy. We plan on going from here to South Dakota (northern route), heading south for Colorado then west to Utah and up the pacific coast.

Change really is exciting. Our migration west will be starting a whole new chapter. The biggest comment I’ve gotten from telling people about it is, “Oh that’s really terrific! You gotta do it while your young.. while you still have the energy & freedom” and its made me realize that the hardest part about doing anything is just doing it. If you really want to do something you gotta just do it. Doesn’t matter what age you are… life’s just too short to wait.

“Once you decided to come to Mexico you should have put all your petty fears away… Your decision to come should have vanquished them. You came because you wanted to come. That’s the warrior’s way. I have told you time and time again, the most effective way to live is as a warrior. Worry and think before you make any decision, but once you make it, be on your way free from worries or thoughts, there will be a million other decisions still awaiting you. That’s the warriors way.” – don Juan
