The Mojave Desert. Historical Route 66. Rocks like big piles of bones, cave formations, cacti and jackrabbits. Sparse. Silence and tiny mice. Joshua trees look like Dr. Seuss drawings from the Lorax. Seeing as it was June when we were passing through we had the campground all to ourselves. The park doesn’t normally get campers this time of year – it is the desert after all. So we set up camp in a cave and made friends with a rabbit and even saw a hummingbird who seemed to be admiring my bright orange bicycle. The experience was very cool – so much silence you could hear tiny mice scuttle across the desert sand and up the rock walls. We explored the park a bit the next day and enjoyed some lunch in the desert sun before it got too hot to bare.
