The Great Sand Dunes

When I think about driving up Route 101 in Oregon I think about how different every single beach on the coast is from each other. They are so distinct – it’s hard to comprehend just how different beauty can appear to be.

We reached Great Sand Dunes N.P. and couldn’t believe our eyes. Big, dense trees growing from the tops of amazing sand dunes. I didn’t know trees could survive in just purely sandy soil. What a vision. We set up camp early in the day and pedaled our way down to the ocean side – being sure not to get run over by the many atvs roaming around -which seemed to be a hot activity at the Great Sand Dunes.

Once we got to the beach I thought about home. The sandy dunes, long rock jetties and beach grass reminded me of the Atlantic. The water was crystal clear and was cold to the touch. Giant razor clam shells littered the beach and the sand still sounded of corduroy breeze. A vermillion red helicopter flew over head against the azure blue sky. We sat for a while and meditated – catching our spirits and making them sit a while. The sun was still shining in the late afternoon when we decided to make our way back to camp. The sandy dunes left an everlasting impression on us as we were covered head to toe with sparkling dust that was so fine we just accepted our fate and took it with us…
