City of Roses

“Of all flowers methinks the rose is best” William Shakespeare

Since we were in the City of Roses we decided to head over to the International Rose Test Garden which overlooks the whole city. The garden was founded in 1917 with the primary purpose of serving as a testing ground for new rose varieties. They have several different gardens within the rose park growing hundreds of different rose varieties. I am always one to stop and smell the roses on the street corner so you can imagine the fun I had smelling all the different varieties. It was amazing to me how different they all can smell. Perhaps the most fragrant were the pink, red and orange varieties. The yellow roses might have been my favorite – they smelled of sweet citrus and didn’t overwhelm the senses. The garden also has a beautiful amphitheater for outdoor performances – which I imagine is beautiful at night with the lights from the city down below. The garden was a beautiful way to take in the City of Roses.
