Seattle, WA

On our way up to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Orcas, Rory and I spent the day in Seattle. Of course it was a bit rainy.. why wouldn’t it be in Seattle? But we enjoyed our time exploring in and around the wharf, taking a walk through old town and wandering through some antique stores (which there seemed to be plenty of).

We were eager to see a band I have recently gotten into by recommendation of my dearest friends – The Dutchess and the Duke at the The Tractor Tavern on NW Ballard. Ballard was a really nice, classy area. We found this really cool bar just down the street called the The Old Town Ale House and treated ourselves to a fresh belgium brew and some fish and chips. It was delicious and for a $6 special it was even better. Before the show we also stopped in at Bop Street Records. The most amazing record store I have ever been in. They have over 500,000 records! It’s pretty much vinyl heaven. After searching through the many many bins upstairs we were told that we had to go downstairs to see the rest of their collection. Down in the catacombs you will find everything from The Beatles to opera to dixieland. There were bins upon bins of old victrola records. It was amazing. Apparently, Radiohead took the time to go, but I was pretty psyched to see The Dutchess and The Duke walk in when we were leaving…..

Simply put the show was great! It was kind of nice to see an amateurish band play with that soul that a lot of bands lose along the way. The lead singer, Jesse Lortz has this rich but gritty voice reminiscent of the rock n’ roll generations of the 60’s/70’s . Kimberly Morrison is the voice that lifts his rougher edges and is equally talented in her guitar skills. They are really fun to watch together up on the stage. Their music is known for the strength of its simplicity. Acoustic guitars, tambourines, hand claps etc make up these tracks on their first CD called She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke which was recorded on an 8 track recorder. You should check them out and be sure to get their new CD Sunrise/Sunset when it comes out in October. Here’s a cool music video for their song, Mary .
