The XXX Ranch..

Now, I’m not even sure if that’s what it’s called but I liked the name and for some reason it’s quite suiting. Anyway, we came across the XXX Ranch/artist commune because Jess’ really good friend Blaine lives there. It’s a few acre lot set back a ways from the road and as I turned down the driveway I didn’t expect at all what I was about to see..

It’s the kind of place you might read about in a Tom Robbins novel. Years and years worth of collected junk and self expression were everywhere. There were a few main buildings on the property – a large warehouse/art building where the owner kept most of his art schtuff (aka amazing junk), a communal kitchen with a deck, a shared, bare-bones and very rustic bathroom and the main house where the owner lived. Blaine and a few others lived in the quaint trailers on the property.

There was inspiration and visual stimulation everywhere. Lots of recycled junk turned into art and decoration, vibrantly painted, tiled buildings, family photos and miscellaneous treasures, magical, enclosed paths leading from one place to another and a nice big fire pit. There was also a giant pecan tree that Jess spent a good deal of time harvesting from.. mmm fresh pe-cahns (which I was lucky enough to have been given upon leaving Texas). What a treat it was to meet Blaine and see this creative space in which she lived which really was unique especially in the city where the streets heading into the city are lined with single level houses. As we jumped back on our bikes and headed home, I felt happy for sharing such a magical little nook right there in the city that I might have otherwise just rode right on by..
