Something to Cherish..

"cherish your solitude. take trains by yourself
to places you have never been. sleep out alone
under the stars. learn how to drive a stick shift.
go so far away that you stop being afraid of not
coming back. say no when you don't want to do
something. say yes if your instincts are strong, even
if everyone around you disagrees. decide whether
you want to be liked or admired. decide if fitting in
is more important than finding out what you're doing here.
 believe in kissing."

  1. just browsing back through your old blog posts this morning while i wake up with my earl gray tea + almond milk after a night of dancing. every time i come across this quote it brings a tear or two to my eye. i believe the things we know the best within ourselves are the ones that we know to be true despite a whole room full of people who are unable to understand them.

did i tell you i am learning to drive stick shift?
    (independently of having read this.)

one day when i was living in nyc, and i felt so low that i asked “uncle walt” (whitman) what to do. i opened the book, put my finger down, and this is what i found:

Whoever you are! claim your own at any hazard!
These shows of the east and west are tame compared to you,
These immense meadows—these interminable rivers—you are immense and interminable as they,

These furies, elements, storms, motions of Nature, throes of apparent dissolution—you are he or she who is master or mistress over them,
Master or mistress in your own right over Nature, elements, pain, passion, dissolution.

The hopples fall from your ankles—you find an unfailing sufficiency,
Old or young, male or female, rude, low, rejected by the rest, whatever you are promulges itself,
Through birth, life, death, burial, the means are provided, nothing is scanted,
Through angers, losses, ambition, ignorance, ennui, what you are picks its way.
