On a Hot Summer’s Day…

I hope you all are staying safe and cool this summer season.  A week ago temperatures hit over 90 degrees which felt like 100 with all the dense humidity.  There were air quality warnings that kept many people from spending a lot of time outside.  There was no breeze and it was uncomfortable both inside & out.  I decided not to open the farm stand and it’s a good thing I did because it was one of those days when you felt like you could hardly breath.  The air was thick like a sauna and there was no relief even in the shade.

But for someone who works outside, has a list of things to do in the field, & doesn’t come in until 8 o’clock most evenings, taking it easy in the summer is a foreign concept.  It didn’t take much though, as soon as I’d start a project a few minutes in I’d remember that it was hotter than Hades and I should relax and take it easy.  So, the only thing I could do for relief (since we don’t have AC) was to fill up our metal washtub with ice cold water from the hose and sit in it.  Just sit.  And that’s just what I did for hours on end on a really hot summer’s day (plus a few others things pictured below)…

Starting the day off with some homemade polenta made from farm fresh corn meal!

The best kind of relief on the hottest day (yet) of the summer…

Thank goodness for water.. seriously..

The blue hazy sky up above…

It felt like a wall heat from a flame out of the water…

The Queen & tendrils…

Garlic ready to be cleaned up…

Beautiful!  And tasty too..

A friend I met along the way… a rhinobeetle, perhaps?

A walk through my mom’s lovely flower gardens..

There isn’t much prettier than a sunflower in the mid-summer sun…

A most perfect zinnia stands out from the rest…

One of the Powers’ favorite flowers…

The sea of color goes on and on…

Stunning.

Velvety snap dragons..

Even in the haze… this is home sweet home.

  2. Look like the most relaxing space I can imagine. Your farm has such a beautiful old world feel to it. So I have a quick question for you. Do you guys keep a winter garden? I am trying to put a plan together for this this winter and I was thinkin’ about visiting some amazing winter gardens. Ideas?

    regards,
